The region of modern-day Thailand and Cambodia has been home to various indigenous communities for thousands of years. From about 1000 CE and over a period of many centuries, Thai people migrated south into the region from Yunnan. The Khmer Empire (predecessor to modern Cambodia) dominated the region starting around 1200 CE. Today, the vast majority of Cambodians still belong to the Khmer ethnic group, while the majority of the people of Thailand are ethnically Thai — both preserving a strong cultural and genetic connection to their regional ancestors. Many elements of local culture have become globally popular, including Thai cuisine — which emphasizes an interplay between very different flavors — and Muay Thai, a combat sport that originated in 16th century Thailand. Originally constructed as a Hindu temple in the 12th century, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat later became a Buddhist temple and remains the world’s largest religious monument today.
